GNOCIS Plus in China

Project Manager

In order to help reduce emissions from conventional coal fired power plants in China, E.ON UK, Power Technology have partnered with Telek Technologies to support their implementation of GNOCIS Plus combustion optimisation on Chinese power plants.

GNOCIS Plus is an intelligent software application developed by E.ON UK, Power Technology that runs on a dedicated Windows PC. GNOCIS Plus, continuously updates its optimised combustion models based on dynamic combustion plant data received to, 'advise' (in open loop mode) or 'directly bias' (in closed loop mode) plant actuator controllers to achieve the optimum combustion conditions at that time. GNOCIS Plus has the facility to retrain its models to take account of new operational regimes and plant ageing.

Lifecycle Project Management Ltd, were contracted by Power Technology to manage the first project implementation at Mawan Power Station in China.

The project was implemented over an eighteen month period, split into two phases. The scope of work included the establishment of specific plant requirements via parametric testing, implementation of the combustion model builds and configuration, installation on site and final commissioning and performance testing.

Despite the obvious cultural and language barriers, the primary aim of the project, to reduce NOx emissions, was successfully achieved.

The success of the project played a significant role in securing the funding to improve the product yet further and to promote increased far east customer interest.

Due to an increasing workload Lifecycle Project Management Ltd were contracted by E.ON UK, Power Technology to manage the existing programme of GNOCIS Plus development projects in the UK.

The application of professional project management techniques and practices together with the identification of a single point of contact secured the focus of in-house and customer engineering team efforts to deliver work packages and products in accordance with the base lined project schedule.

The implementation of GNOCIS Plus on several generating units, over a twelve month period, provided the basis for a number of enhancements and ultimately the encouragement to re-develop the product utilising latest software technologies.

North Hyde

Project Manager

Alstom Grid (previously Areva T&D) entered into joint venture with Skanska and Mott MacDonald to form the South East Electricity Substation Alliance in partnership with National Grid.

Lifecycle Project Management Ltd were contracted by Alstom Grid to project manage the detailed design and delivery of the reinforcement of the substation at North Hyde. The scope of the project included site survey, civil construction, mechanical and HV electrical installation of primary plant together with modification to protection and control equipment systems.

The first and major phase of the delivery has been successfully completed with the remainder scheduled for completion in 2011.

SCADA II

Project Manager

E.ON UK supply power to the National Grid via their diverse generation fleet, including fossil fuels and renewable energy sources. Within their 'Renewable Energy' business, there is a rapidly growing energy capacity derived from onshore and offshore Wind Farm installations.

It is vitally important for E.ON UK to be able to forecast their energy generation from each source. To this end, a power forecasting software application was developed by E.ON UK, Power Technology as part of the SCADA II project.

Lifecycle Project Management Ltd were contracted by E.ON UK, Power Technology and assigned to lead the project team from development of the 'Software Requirements Specification' (SRS) through detailed design, implementation, test, installation and roll-out phases. The scope of work extended to the development of User Manuals and Training Course material.

In accordance with customer requirements, the Prince2 methodolgy was employed to manage the project. This was the first time Prince2 had been applied at Power Technology, requiring the adaptation to existing mangement procedures.

The first phase of this high profile project was successfully delivered to an internal E.ON UK customer over a twelve month period, commencing mid 2005.

Rugeley BOFA

Project Manager

PCS are a small but very experienced software integrator servicing the power generation industry. Based on proven experience and ability to deliver against tight deadlines, they were invited by Doosan Babcock to tender for the software modifications associated with the implementation of Boosted Over Fire Air (BOFA) proposed for Units 6 and 7 at International Power's Rugeley Power Station.

As the project required the demonstrable ability to plan and implement the project in accordance with recognised project management techniques, PCS contracted Lifecycle Project Management Ltd to assist with the tender preparation and strategy planning of the implementation.

At the beginning of 2007, PCS secured the contract to implement the project and again contracted Lifecycle Project Management Ltd to undertake the associated project management from commencement through to handover phase.

The scope of works to be delivered by PCS included the design, implementation, test and commissioning of BOFA software controls (PLC and SCADA) to extend the existing DCS/APMS for both generation units. The SCADA modifications were implemented by Thales, on subcontract to PCS.

The project was successfully completed as planned toward the end of 2007.

Damhead Creek APS

PCS are a small but very experienced software integrator servicing the power generation industry. PCS contracted Lifecycle Project Management Ltd to support the redesign of the APS Start-up and Shutdown sequences at SP's Damhead Creek Power Station. This technically challenging and time constrained assignment offered a further opportunity to build on the trust and success acquired from previous collaborations.

The scope of support provided by Lifecycle Project Management Ltd, included the investigation, mapping, documentation and site based testing of existing block sequences, together with general support and strategic input to the implementation programme for the redesigned sequences.

The assignment commenced late in 2006, completing on plan mid 2007.
